A message from your Club President Chris Murphy
A monthly update from the BSSA President Chris Murphy
Hi Members,
Firstly, a quick note to those members who have not yet paid their 2022 subs. Could you please action this as soon as you can. If you can’t pay in person, please use the direct payment option to the BSSA Club account which is on the Membership & Ring Order form on the BSSA website - http://www.bssainc.org.au/
2022 ANBC Show
Pleasingly, I can report that the 2022 ANBC Show is going ahead. After initial cancellation, and then a rethink, the BCSA on 30 Jan voted to present a different proposal for the National Show to the ANBC. The ANBC met on 3 Feb and ratified the BCSA proposal and then requested the other 6 zones consult their Clubs and reply by 10 February. To date all 7 zones have ratified the BCSA submission, which is an indication of the intent throughout Australia for the Show to be held in some format this year. For your information I have attached a copy of the BCSA submission to the ANBC which is now the blueprint for the 2022 Show.
As you will note from the BCSA submission the event will be held in Victor Harbor. The main driver behind this location is the thought that the risk of Covid is reduced in Victor Harbor compared to the Hotel Chancellor in Hindley Street. Other key aspects of the proposal are that the Show will be professionally live streamed free of charge to anyone interested, and that it will be a closed show – i.e no visitors will be permitted. So if you are keen to see the best birds in Australia live and up close, I suggest you contact Wayne Weidenhofer and volunteer for the event.
February Club Meeting
For those that could not make it to our February meeting, a few points to note from the meeting were:
Yes, we are up and running for 2022. To access the auctions, either log in via the C32 link which is on the BSSA facebook posts, or go via the BSSA website http://www.bssainc.org.au/birds-available.html
All BSSA members are invited to submit their excess birds to be sold via the auction. An email earlier this week outlined the information required and the email addresses to send the photos and descriptions.
Good luck – happy selling and buying.
BSSA You Tube site.
I just wanted to give another plug for our you tube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbhhfUxZlykjPLw7S6_RX3w/videos?view=0&sort=dd&shelf_id=0
We have 561 subscribers to our channel and on it 21 quality videos that you could watch over and over again.
2021 Status Movement Points.
Attached is the BCSA status movement points update for the past 3 years of exhibiting. For those members not aware movement in status from Novice to Intermediate, and Intermediate to Open is achieved by attaining a specific number of points in a 3 year period with a different number of birds. I have also attached the BCSA policy around status movement for those interested.
Congratulations to Deane Grantham, Michael Sloper and Michael Smith on their elevations to new exhibition status’ for 2022.
As you will note, there were quite a few exceptions for 2021, which is where we did not have a minimum number of exhibitors in a particular section to allow the points to be awarded. Please support our Novices and Intermediates to show their birds, in doing so, a better standard of competition is on display for all.
2022 BSSA Club Shows
We have received a letter from the Vermont Church which has been our regular show venue for the past 15 years, letting us know that their congregation is “closing down”, and they are in the process of handing the Hall and their facilities back to the South Australian division of the Uniting Church.
What that means for us is they cannot guarantee us a hall to hire after 30 June 2022.
So we will use Vermont for the Murphy Classic Novice and Intermediate Show, but then switch to a different hall for our remaining shows in 2022.
Show Dates for 2022 are:
Saturday 26 March – Murphy Classic – Novice & Intermediate Show at Vermont Hall.
Sunday 1 May – Stan Watson Breeders Show at Westbourne Park Memorial Hall – 388 Goodwood Road.
Sunday 12 June – Ron Norman Annual Show at Goodwood Road.
Sunday 30 October – Interclub Challenge with North East at Goodwood Road.
Note the change of day to a Sunday – quite simply Saturday’s were not available.
COVID Requirements
Current covid requirements for the Unley meeting hall are:
Limit of 52 members at our meetings.
QR code scanning in required, or manual sign in book.
Masks are required unless eating or drinking.
We need to avoid shared items of cutlery (unless we wash them between each use)
Avoid shared plates of food.
Limit our meetings to under 2 hours if possible.
Regards
Chris Murphy

February Club Meeting
For those that could not make it to our February meeting, a few points to note from the meeting were:
- Our new Constitution was accepted on the evening and is now with Shiralee Reardon – our Public Officer to lodge.
- Kerry Murphy gave a very interesting talk on the “importance of good quality normals in a stud of budgerigars”.
- George England is our new Show Manager.
- Jay Larkin is our new Web Master.
- 2021 BSSA Club Champions are Jason & Wayne Weidenhofer, Paul Soul, Ian & Gina Wise and Sadie Crossley.
- The Bird of the Night was won by Ken & Janet Harris. Thanks to all who participated, we had more birds than we thought turn up for judging on the night.
