The following information is intended to provide some basic information to the newcomers in this Hobby, in respect of the manner in which the varieties of the budgerigars produce. More detailed information can be obtained from the many excellent publications.

INHERITANCE FACTORS
Dominant Varieties
  • Australian Dominant Pied
  • Yellowface
  • Spangle
  • Violet
  • Green
  • Grey
(Approx 60% Dominant)
Recessive Varieties
  • Recessive Pied
  • Clearwing
  • Greywing
  • Fallow
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Blue
Sex-Linked Varieties
  • Lacewing
  • Cinnamon
  • Opaline
  • Albino
  • Lutino
  • Clearbody

Sex-Linked Varieties:
Passes from Mother to Son in split form.
( i.e: Cinnamon hen produces normal colour/split Cinnamon cocks)

ALSO passes from Father to Daughter in visual form.
( i.e: Cinnamon or Normal colour/split Cinnamon cock produces Cinnamon hens)

Passes from Father to Son in split form.
( i.e: Cinnamon or Normal colour/split Cinnamon cock produces Normal colour cocks, which are split Cinnamon)

NOTE : NO HEN CAN BE SPLIT FOR A SEX LINKED FACTOR

Normal/Split Cinnamon Cock x Cinnamon Hen


Normal/Split Cinnamon Cock x Normal Hen


Normal Cock x Cinnamon Hen
= Cinnamon cocks + hens
= Normal/Cinnamon cocks + Cinnamon     hens
= Normal/Split Cinnamon cocks +             Cinnamon cocks and hens + normal         hens

= Normal cocks + Normal/Split Cinnamon     cocks + Normal hens + Cinnamon hens

= Normal/Split Cinnamon cocks +             Cinnamon hens

Dominant Varieties:
To produce birds of the Dominant varieties only one of the parents have to be of a Dominant type.

NOTE : NO BIRD CAN BE SPLIT FOR DOMINANT
( i.e.: A blue cannot be split for green)

Light Green cock x Light Green hen
Grey cock x Grey hen
= Light Green cocks and Light Green hens
= Grey cocks and Grey hens
    ( some single factor Grey, some double     Factor grey)

Recessive Varieties:

To produce birds of the Recessive varieties, both parents must carry the recessive factor; Either in the visual form, ( ie: a Recessive Pied) or in the split form. ( ie: Light Green/split Recessive Pied)

Sky Blue cock x Sky Blue hen
Light Green/Blue cock x Sky Blue hen

Light Green split Blue cock x Light Green split Blue hen
= Sky Blue cocks & Sky Blue hens
= Light Green cocks & hens split Blue, &         Sky Blue cocks & Sky Blue hens
= Light Green cocks & hens/split Blue &         Sky Blue cocks & Sky Blue hens
