BSSA SHOW MANAGERS REPORT FOR 2023
Well another year has passed and the standard of our birds seems to be increasing year on year, with some fantastic exhibits at our 3 main shows and the interclub challenge, which was hosted by the North East in conjunction with Budgie Fest.
The show season kicked off with the Ron Norman which was held on April 2 at the Westbourne Park Memorial Hall.
We had 340 entries which made it one of our biggest shows for quite some time. This number was even more significant considering that two breeders, who would normally show 60 odd birds between them, were unable to present birds for this show. Let’s see if we can crack the 400 barrier in 2024.
The show was superbly judged, in a no-nonsense manner, by our guest Major Award judge, Steven Moe. Steven was well received by everyone and his approach to explaining and educating everyone on his decisions was very enlightening to all.
The day belonged to Ken and Janet Harris who won Grand Champion with a very nice Dominant Pied Hen.
Graham McCallum cleaned up at the Intermediate level taking out Champion Intermediate plus Reserve Cock and Hen. While Kev Back took out the Champion Novice award.
Kelsey Clayton won the Best Junior Exhibit.
Our second show, The Stan Watson, was held on the 7th of May with the Major Awards being judged by Ian Marshall. There were 198 birds entered with Ken & Janet Harris taking out the Grand Champion with their Dominant Pied hen. This bird also went on to win the Dominant Pied class at the Nationals held in Ballarat. This was a fantastic result and Both Ken and Janet deserve all the accolades that go with winning a National title.
Ian and Gina Wise won the Intermediate Champion while Danny Brill took out Champion Novice. Noticeably it was great to see the overall strength of the Novice section with Trevor Goodenough and Paul Wilton featuring.
Jenson and Darcie Osobase-Kelb won the Junior status.
The Murphy Classic for future champions was held on July 2, a bit later in the year than usual, with 125 entries judged by Kelwyn Kakoschke. Ian and Gina Wise had the Champion Intermediate bird while Trevor Goodenough took out the Champion Novice bird. It’s great to see some strength coming through in both the Intermediate and Novice sections.
The UBC Interclub Challenge was hosted by the North East Budgie Society with the BSSA taking out the victory. The BSSA had 9 exhibitors and accumulated 256 points while NEBS had 8 exhibitors with 171 points. Interestingly the Holmes Family accumulated 182 points.
It would be remiss not to mention the outstanding work that Troy Holmes has done in bringing Budgie fest and the Interclub Challenge together. This was an outstanding success in promoting budgies and our hobby in general, not only here in SA, but is still being talked about around Australia via social media and through the ongoing efforts that Troy is doing with the promotion of the Nationals in Launceston this year.
Finally, I want to encourage ALL members to show as many birds as they possibly can. I believe that shows are extremely important for not only building an eye for the ideal budgie according to the standard, but for fostering comradery amongst our membership. Our ranks have been building, especially in the Novice section, and the Intermediates have now got some healthy competition happening.
Participating in our shows also recognizes our efforts for hard work. Points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each class and at each status level. Your bird doesn’t need to win Grand Champion for you to have a rewarding show season.
Of course there is often disappointment with broken tails or dropped flights, poor breeding seasons, etc. This is why it is called a challenge. Are you up for it in 2024?
Get together with like-minded people at our shows and talk about our fantastic hobby while trying to pick a winner and maybe discuss with a judge why the one you thought would win, didn’t. Be part of it, get involved, we are a club and we need your participation to be successful.
I want to thank all of the members who helped out during the year, even the smallest of jobs makes a difference and helps in making all of our shows a success and an enjoyment for all.
